On Friday April 12, 2013, Ward 7 Councilmember Yvette Alexander is hosting a press conference to announce her support during Alcohol Prevention Awareness Month of the Ward 7 Safe & Drug-Free Communities Coalition’s (W7SDCC) policy agenda to reduce youth substance use/abuse and specifically underage drinking in Ward 7 and hopefully across the city.
The press event will be held at Dave Brown Liquor Store, 4721 Sheriff Road N.E. Washington, at 10:30 am. This location has been selected because Mr. Brown, owner of the store has pledged to support the Ward 7 Safe & Drug-Free Communities Coalition’s agenda and remove the advertising from his store windows. Alcohol advertising has been linked to youths’ use of alcohol products in numerous scientific studies. Exposure and attraction to alcohol advertisements affects whether young people will drink alcohol. The appeal of alcohol to underage youth can be limited by reducing youth exposure to alcohol advertisements and marketing. The American Medical Association has called for a statutory ban on all alcohol advertising except for inside retail and wholesale outlets.
We hope you will join us at the press conference in supporting this Ward 7 underage drinking prevention initiative. Would you please respond by email Wednesday, April 10, 2013 to indicate if you plan to attend.
