Small Business Fair

The office of Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) today announced the wide array of companies, organizations and government agencies that will be represented by specialists who will provide one-on-one counseling for D.C. small businesses at Norton’s Small Business Fair on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place NW.  The event is free of charge, open only to D.C. residents and D.C. small businesses, and seating is first-come, first-served.  Advance registration is underway.  To be assured a place, D.C. business owners and residents are encouraged to submit a registration form (http://norton.house.gov/images/stories/pdf/smallbusinessfairparticipantpre-registrationform.pdf) via email to norton.events@mail.house.gov or fax to (202) 408-9048.

The one-on-one advice and workshops will help District small businesses and residents start, develop and grow small businesses in a recovering economy.  Business experts will provide one-on-one counseling to participants in seven different business areas.  (1) For loans, banks and other lenders will be on-site to provide micro-loan applications and other financial assistance.  (2) For government procurement, federal government agency procurement officers will be on site with small business procurement opportunities available in the next quarter.  (3) For legal advice, D.C. pro-bono and other attorneys will be on site to offer advice on business structure, licensing, liability, and other business-related legal concerns.  (4) Accounting and tax experts will provide advice.  (5) Insurance experts will offer information on how to insure facilities and fixed assets, workers compensation, and other insurance matters.  (6) Marketing experts will provide advice on how to market a small business.  (7) For capacity building, experts will provide insight on how to grow a small business.

The fair begins with a one-hour plenary session featuring U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) District Director Antonio Bass, who will discuss specific ways the SBA can help D.C. residents and small business owners grow their businesses using SBA resources and programs.  Then, Norman H. Jones, Sr., owner of Capital Energy Group, the D.C. small business of the year, will speak on how he learned to succeed as a small business owner in the District of Columbia.
